THE SCHOOL

The Nritya Bharati School of Kathak Dance was established in 2000 by Namita Debroy with the mission to preserve Indian culture away from our homeland and also to present our traditions to the wider community. Since our inception we have earned a positive reputation as a school that excels in teaching and showing off India's traditional arts.

Namita studied Kathak dance at Agartala Music College under Lucknow University, India, completing her Visharad at 15 years of age. She was trained by Pt. Bihari Lal Sing and Dr. Umashankar Chakraborty (disciple of Pt Birju Maharaj) of the Lucknow Gharana. She also was a competitor in many state and regional dance competitions and was a recipient of the eastern zone dance scholarship. Her formal training extends to violin and guitar with a hobby in painting and artwork.

Besides dance and music she also have a Masters in Political Science from Calcutta University.

"Dance is a form of worship through
which a dancer can reach the Almighty."

Namita's teaching philosophy highlights the many benefits of classical dance. The dancer has to undergo extensive training, developing physical stamina as well as discipline and character. Classical dance training also builds self-confidence and allows for the expression of inner feelings. Finally, the dance form provides deeper understanding of India's great mythological epics, as it is based on mythology and puranas. As such, Kathak training provides for a holistic learning experience for those who love music and dance.

Kathak itself is a versatile dance form. It is the total body movement enhancing total control over the body and mind. Kathak dance requires an immense amount of stamina and energy and can be developed with time and persistence.

Currently, we're located in Brisbane's Southside suburb, Sunnybank Hills and may open another centre in Brisbane's Northside from January, 2017. Anyone can learn dance at any age and we're always appreciative of those students who are interested to learn this unique form of dance.
